Shipping 5.0
We have the privilege of welcoming experienced speakers to discuss how Shipping 5.0 applies data and artificial intelligence to support human decision-making. In a context of information overload, the discussions will focus on how to design approaches that help people make better, more resilient decisions, considering multiple alternatives in an increasingly uncertain operating environment. Decarbonization will also be addressed as a central challenge in this process. The Brazilian cabotage market will serve as the starting point for examining how environmental strategies and operational changes can respond to recent shocks and extend their impact to international trade and maritime transport.

  7. Panel

How to Build Resilience in Shipping

This panel will explore the transition beyond the paradigm of absolute optimization of the 4.0 era, in which everything was planned for maximum efficiency, but crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, or extreme weather events have shown how vulnerable the system can be. In this context, we will discuss how to build a more resilient maritime transport system, capable of absorbing shocks, rapidly adapting to change, and continuing to operate even in the face of unpredictable scenarios. Key challenges highlighted: response to climate-driven droughts in the Amazon River; port infrastructure and logistical bottlenecks in Brazil; preparedness for storms and floods; high freight rates due to war zones and instability; trade tensions and tariff wars impacting routes; shortage of Merchant Marine professionals for cabotage shipping.

  13. Panel

Academia, Government and the Private Sector: Building the Foundations of Shipping 5.0

The advancement of Shipping 5.0 depends on more than isolated technology: it requires effective coordination between academia, government, the private sector, and operational data to transform scientific knowledge into models of coordination, predictability, and collaborative decision-making within the port and maritime environment. Drawing on international experiences with PortCDM and Port Community Systems (PCS), the panel discusses how the integration of applied research, authorities, operators, and those responsible for the day-to-day coordination of port calls can enable just-in-time arrivals, reduce waiting times, costs, and emissions, and improve resource allocation across the logistics chain. The discussion explores the role of data science and artificial intelligence in building reliable information flows and synchronized decisions, as well as the cultural and operational challenges involved in adopting collaborative models, highlighting the need for professionals capable of bridging technology, port operations, and decision-making in the context of Shipping 5.0.

DatamarLab — Environmental Footprint in Foreign Trade

This session presents the research and innovations developed by DatamarLab, in partnership with universities and the maritime sector, focusing on incorporating the environmental dimension into foreign trade intelligence. The discussion explores the possibility of associating carbon emission estimates with individual logistics movement records, significantly expanding the level of analysis available to the sector. The presentation discusses not only the transformative potential of this approach—which may redefine how companies, governments, and researchers assess environmental impact in trade—but also its methodological challenges, limitations, and risks, reinforcing the importance of transparent models, well-defined assumptions, and responsible data use. The goal is to demonstrate how data science and computational modeling can support more informed decision-making, without losing sight of the inherent complexity of measuring emissions in maritime transport, in line with the principles of Shipping 5.0.
